Lady Gaga’s $1m Facebook Charity Competition

Being one of the most influential people in the world can have a massive impact to a charity. Lady Gaga’s online status is incredible: she is one of the very few who has amassed over 1 billion views on YouTube. She is nearing the 40 million mark on her Facebook page, and she is the most followed person on Twitter with over 11 million followers. So you can imagine how useful she would be to promote charities.

Back in May 2011, Lady Gaga had partnered with the Robin Hood Foundation, a fund-raising organisation which targets poverty in New York City. With the power of social media, she has decided to hold a $1 million dollar Facebook competition. It’s all very simple: Lady Gaga wanted to donate $1m to one of the listed charities and the Facebook followers can choose which one she should donate the money to and also be in the draw for tickets to see in her perform in a sold-out concert.

The charities are all related to supporting and helping young people between the ages of 16 and 24 who are disconnected with the city, uneducated and unemployed. And even though only one charity can receive the $1m donation, the runner-up will all receive smaller grants from Lady Gaga, such is her philanthropic attitude.
